Common Characteristics of a Thief

Home » Blog » Common Characteristics of a Thief

Whether you’re a small business worried about the general population taking from your total profit or a large corporation concerned about embezzlement, you need to know what to look for when assessing a situation for thieves. While there isn’t a specific profile that fits every crook who you work with or enters your building, certain traits are more common than others. And PATRIOT Backgrounds and Investigations, serving Davie, FL, and the nearby region, would like to educate you about some of them.

Works for You

Though you might feel like you should be able to establish a relationship and trust your employees, this isn’t always the case. Statistically speaking, someone who works for you is just as likely to steal as someone off the street.

Plus, it makes sense that someone on the inside would steal from you. This person becomes comfortable with you and the surroundings. He or she knows where the cameras are, when you leave for break, and when you’re likely to check the till or safe.

Is Mindful of Details

Typically, a thief plans well, and they pay careful attention to details. A true thief realizes knowing the exact location of important items and when everyone leaves the building matters. Therefore, that slacker who isn’t a stickler for details, more than likely isn’t your thief.

Not to mention, someone who regularly steals knows that one false move can mean getting caught and facing the consequences of their actions. That means someone who regularly steals knows the importance of minute details.

Is Confident

There’s a better chance a shy, timid, or insecure person will worry about the consequences and fear getting caught. A more confident person doesn’t see the risk and feels they can easily get away with it.

Someone stealing from your business, including an employee or customer, is most likely the person walking with their head held high rather than the introvert. While we’re not saying don’t worry about the timid employee, our experience in criminal investigations has shown us that most thieves are confident.

Is Patient

That employee immediately kicking the candy machine after placing a dollar in and getting nothing is less likely to be a thief. While this sounds odd, considering the bad temper and the fact that they’re impatient are usually negative traits, there’s a good reason why thieves are usually patient.

A thief has to wait for the right time to strike, such as when nobody’s looking or everyone leaves for the day. Major theft jobs can take several months or even years to execute. That’s why with most of our criminal investigations for theft, we notice that thieves tend to be patient.

Is Callous

It takes someone with no emotional attachment to someone or who shows little regard for his or her fellow man to be a thief. Any PATRIOT PI will tell you thieves have a difficult time empathizing with others.

This also makes sense when you think about it. A thief isn’t going to think about the children you support with your business or care that they’re harming the relationship with you.
