Common Traits of Active Shooters/Active Killers

Home » Blog » Common Traits of Active Shooters/Active Killers

Throughout the years, mass shootings have become a more common occurrence. While there are various speculations as to why shootings are more common now than ever before, agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have researched and compared the shooters in these events. As a result, we have a better understanding of what characteristics are common with active shooters. After doing some research, our Florida private investigations firm has some insight. We also offer resources like active killer training to prepare for this scenario and offer background checks to reduce the likelihood of it occurring in your workplace.

Single or Divorced

Most of the time, an active shooter is either single or divorced. This makes sense for two reasons. For one, a person who is single or divorced may be lonely. They don’t have the support of a partner to rely on when they’re feeling anxious, self-conscious, etc. As a result, they have time to contemplate their problems and focus on themselves, more so than a partnered person.

Moreover, someone who is single or divorced may have undesirable traits that have led to them being single or going through a divorce. These same traits are often the ones that are common with active killers.

Known for Bullying Others

According to the FBI, active shooters are known for bullying others. This also makes sense when you think about it. Bullies are often physically stronger than those around them and willing to use this to intimidate others. They’re usually impulsive. Therefore, even though a shooting may have been carefully planned, the initial thought came on a whim and they’re acting on that impulse rather than calming it.

Bullies are often known to break rules and not live by a standard code of conduct. They also tend to have a low tolerance for frustration and lack the ability to feel guilt.

May Be Known for Being Violent

Active shooters often have a history of violent behaviors. They might be known for getting into fights or being aggressive toward a partner. This, however, isn’t always a trait of an active shooter. A history of violence doesn’t necessarily equate to becoming a mass shooter. Conversely, someone who is timid and not willing to stand up for themselves can be pushed over the edge and become an active shooter.

May Be Bullied

In school scenarios, the shooter has often been bullied by the other students. This takes a toll on them mentally and can cause an array of mental issues, including anxiety and depression. Over time, the repetitive bullying can lead to the child deciding they’ve had enough.

It’s possible for an adult to have been bullied as a child. As they grow, they could have mental health problems and may develop violent tendencies.

May Have a Criminal History

Some active shooters do have a previous record of violence or at least a criminal history. Despite popular belief, though, many of the active shooters in the past have obtained their firearms legally because they didn’t have any felonies that would prohibit them from purchasing one.

Has Mental Health Problems

Mental health problems are a common issue with mass shooters. After major shooting incidents, the shooters have been assessed for mental health disorders. In many cases, the shooter had a mental health condition that wasn’t being treated. Some of the more common disorders of mass shooters include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance-abuse disorders.

At PATRIOT Backgrounds and Investigations, we realize that not all mass shooting events are preventable. However, we do believe that you can prepare for it to happen by scheduling active killer training. Additionally, you can reduce the chances of it being an employee by running background checks during the hiring process.
